Measuring
your Carbon Footprint

Carbon Action - Measure requires an organisation to prepare a carbon footprint and report for the period which certification is sought. The carbon footprint must include all significant emissions sources from this period.

What is a carbon footprint?

Your organisation's carbon footprint reflects the total amount of carbon emissions (aka greenhouse gas emissions) it generates in a year.

Your carbon footprint considers the emissions generated from the overall operations of your business, including your suppliers. It draws upon a wide range emissions sources to quantify your total emissions and identify your organisation's highest emitting activities. The first step to reducing your organisation's emissions is measuring your carbon footprint.

A brief summary of your emissions sources:

Direct:

  • Scope 1 / Category 1 - Emissions from sources owned or controlled by the reporting entity. This includes sources such as company fuel usage.

Indirect:

  • Scope 2 / Category 2 - Emissions associated with purchased electricity, heat, or steam.

  • Scope 3 / Category 3-6 - Emissions that occur as part of the value chain of the reporting entity.

Why measure your carbon footprint?

Measuring your carbon footprint allows you to prioritise carbon emissions reduction initatives in the most effective areas of your organisation, and track your emissions reduction progress.

There is an increasing expectation from stakeholders that you take steps
to address climate change.
Measuring your carbon footprint helps you demonstrate your environmental commitment and communicate
your progress.
